Buyer's Guide
Elite Equine Marketplace connects buyers and trainers with green hunter horses for sale from trusted professionals and sellers across the globe. Green hunters are young or inexperienced horses competing in dedicated green hunter divisions โ horses at the beginning of their show career with the talent, movement, and temperament to develop into top competitive hunters and derby horses.
The Platinum Performance/USHJA Green Hunter Incentive Program is one of the most exciting and well-supported programs in hunter sport โ designed to recognize and reward quality young hunters and provide a pathway to USHJA International Hunter Derby competition. The program is open to horses competing as a Green Hunter at four heights: 3', 3'3", 3'6", and 3'9", with stake classes offered throughout the competition year, six regional championships across the country, and an annual championship held at the Kentucky Horse Park alongside the USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship.
Horses enrolled in the GHI Program earn points from stake class results throughout the year, with a Rider Ranking System (Tier I, II, and III) providing additional prize money opportunities for developing riders. A horse with documented GHI Program results and enrollment is one of the most valuable green horses on the market โ representing a clear pathway to the International Hunter Derby.
Green Hunter 3': The entry point to green hunter competition. Horses competing at 3' are typically in their first or second year of show experience. The 3' height is an ideal starting point for young horses developing their rhythm, pace, and hunter way of going in the show environment. Green hunters at 3' that show exceptional quality and movement can also compete in the National Hunter Derby program at this height.
Green Hunter 3'3": A step up for horses with more developed training and show experience. Green hunters at 3'3" are developing toward the 3'6" performance hunter divisions and the USHJA International Hunter Derby program.
Green Hunter 3'6": One of the most competitive green hunter heights, sitting at the same height as the USHJA International Hunter Derby. A horse that excels as a green hunter at 3'6" with GHI enrollment is actively developing toward championship-level derby competition.
Green Hunter 3'9" and High Performance Conformation Hunter 3'9": The highest green hunter height, for horses developing toward high performance hunter and 4' derby competition. Horses at this level represent the very top of the young hunter market.
The qualities that define a great green hunter prospect are the same qualities that win in the performance hunter and derby rings โ natural, flowing movement at all three gaits, a correct and beautiful jump style, a willing and trainable temperament, and the physical scope to develop for higher heights as their training progresses. The best green hunters move with natural rhythm and expression, jump with a flat, reaching style, and have the mental maturity to progress steadily through the divisions without tension or resistance.
Elite Equine Marketplace lists green hunter horses from young prospects just starting their show careers through experienced green hunters with full GHI Program records, championship experience, and documented competition history.
Green pony hunters are among the most exciting investments in the pony market โ young or inexperienced ponies competing in their first or second year at the green pony hunter height, with the movement, temperament, and athletic ability to develop into competitive regular division ponies and Pony Finals champions.
Green Small Pony Hunters: Green small ponies (12.2hh and under) compete at 2'3" in the green small pony hunter division at Pony Finals and at USEF-rated shows throughout the qualifying season. A green small pony can only compete in the green division once โ making a green Pony Finals appearance a unique and significant milestone in a small pony's career. Green small ponies with the quality, movement, and temperament to develop into competitive regular small ponies are in high demand from families and programs investing in the pony market.
Green Medium Pony Hunters: Green medium ponies (13.2hh and under) compete at 2'6" in their first or second year of green medium pony hunter competition. The ideal green medium pony has natural, flowing movement, a flat and beautiful jump, and a willing temperament that suggests a long, successful career in the regular medium pony hunter divisions. Green medium ponies qualifying for and competing at Pony Finals in the green division represent some of the most valuable ponies in the market.
Green Large Pony Hunters: Green large ponies (14.2hh and under) compete at 2'9"โ3'0" in the green large pony hunter division โ the most prestigious green pony division. The best green large ponies move with the quality and expression of top regular division large ponies, jump with a flat, floating style, and have the presence and substance to compete at Pony Finals and beyond. A green large pony with exceptional movement and a successful green Pony Finals debut is one of the most sought-after and valuable animals in the pony hunter market.
Green pony hunters qualify for USEF Pony Finals by winning one Championship or two Reserve Championships in a USEF Premier ("AA") or National ("A") rated green pony section during the qualifying period. A pony can only compete in the green division at Pony Finals once โ after their green Pony Finals appearance, they compete in the regular division. This once-in-a-career milestone makes a green Pony Finals appearance an important and memorable event in any pony's history, and green Pony Finals-qualified ponies carry significant market value.
